Estou usando o zsh no OS X Terminal.app e, por um bom tempo, tenho desejado uma maneira de alternar entre os prompts anterior / seguinte na saída do terminal.

Uma conveniência com isso seria poder revisar (e rastrear erros em) o final da saída de cada comando; por exemplo. quando você constrói coisas da fonte com ./configure; faço; faça a instalação. Nota: Obviamente, não estou me referindo a ir e voltar no histórico de comandos, mas sim dar uma olhada nos finais da saída de cada comando.

Alguém já ouviu falar de tal funcionalidade no mundo * nix (preferencialmente também no Mac)? Seria necessário algum tipo de plug-in Terminal-centric OS, ou pode ser programaticamente feito através de um script de shell que pode ser amarrado a um atalho de teclado? Talvez eu seja o único a pensar sobre isso? :)

Eu nunca ouvi falar de tal recurso com shells típicos (zsh, fish ou outros) em emuladores de terminal típicos. Uma vez que você pressionou Enter em um prompt, essa linha de comando existe apenas como uma entrada de histórico no que diz respeito ao shell, e como um monte de caracteres exibidos (indistinguíveis da saída do comando) o emulador de terminal está em causa.

Por outro lado, o tipo de navegação que você pede está disponível como uma regra em shells executados em um buffer Emacs , com M-x shell se você quer seu shell usual e a edição de linha de comando do Emacs ou M-x eshell se você quer um shell embutido no Emacs.

Em eshell no Emacs, existe um comando (ainda não mencionado aqui em outras respostas) que parece abordar a tarefa sobre a qual você está implicitamente se perguntando ao fazer sua pergunta - eshell-show-output ; sua descrição ( C-h f eshell-show-output ):

It is bound to C-c C-r, C-M-l.

(eshell-show-output &optional arg)

Display start of this batch of interpreter output at top of window. Sets mark to the value of point when this command is run. With a prefix argument, narrows region to last command output.

Uma resposta para sua pergunta é usar o emacs com o M-x eshell. Isso oferece uma funcionalidade de shell razoavelmente completa dentro do emacs. É possível obviamente dar uma olhada rápida nos arquivos abrindo-os no editor, mas, o mais importante, você pode usar sua funcionalidade de pesquisa para pesquisar no buffer por qualquer saída anterior (ou por prompts anteriores).

Outra resposta é usar a tela, acredito que também tenha uma funcionalidade de pesquisa do histórico, mas já faz tempo demais desde que usei para lembrar quais são os combos de teclas.

Para expandir o comentário do xenoterracide ...

Em vez de executar make , eu coloquei isso no meu .bashrc 

# make with an automatic log and pager
m()
{
    command make "$@" 2>&1 1>&- 1>make.log | tee -a make.log
}

execute m em vez de make .

Isso coloca toda a saída em make.log , mas só imprime erros no console.

Dessa forma, você não tem toneladas de saída na tela, pode facilmente ver erros e pode ler make.log para diagnosticar problemas se falhar.

Não tenho certeza se isso deve ser uma resposta, mas como estou postando uma imagem, acho que funcionará.

Você pode fazer com que o seu prompt bash pareça diferente para que seja facilmente detectado, ou use o zsh e faça com que seu prompt seja parecido com isto.
