grep por n ou mais períodos em uma determinada linha

Question

Eu quero ser capaz de combinar arbitrariamente linhas que contenham muitos períodos, como este:

$ echo "there's. someone on the wing. some. thing." | grep -stuFF [[:idunno:]]{4,}
there's. someone on the wing. some. thing.

Eu tentei cegamente tatear:

grep -P [[.]]{,\} textfile
grep -P \.{,\} textfile

e depois tentou algo que eu sabia que iria funcionar em algum nível

grep -P [[:punct:]]{,\} textfile

mas [[:punct:]]{,\} decepcionante apenas pegou muitas linhas que eu queria que o grep perdesse para que eu pudesse virar o comando e fazer um grep -v .

Mesmo fazendo grep -P '\.{4,}' não retorna as linhas que estou tentando grep, que se parecem com:

Isso corresponderá a pelo menos 4 períodos dentro de uma linha, separados ou não.
