Configurando piano digital e computador com interface MIDI

Eu tenho um cabo MIDI que possui interfaces IN e OUT.

Eu quero conectar meu piano (Yamaha P95) ao laptop (rodando o Ubuntu), para poder gravar músicas midi.

Conectei o cabo entre o piano e o laptop como no esquema a seguir:

 Yamaha P95
     +-- OUT :: IN-----------\
     +-- IN  :: OUT-----------\------USB :: USB--+Laptop

Nenhum software pode detectar eventos no piano.

Quais são as maneiras de depurar o problema? Eu fiz algo errado?

Troque os plugues. Eu tive esse cabo uma vez, e pelo menos nesse caso eu tive que conectar "IN" para "IN" e "OUT" para "OUT".
