i915 vs i915_bpo

No trabalho, recebi 3 desktops idênticos com a CPU Skylake e o chipset gráfico integrado i915. Tanto o primeiro quanto o segundo desktop estão trabalhando com o driver i915_bpo e ambos aceitaram dois monitores.

O último não inicializa sem o parâmetro 'nomodeset' no grub2 e tenta carregar os drivers i915 e i915_bpo.

São poucas as diferenças em como o kernel as detecta.
