O shell do Ubuntu não mostra o caminho atual

No meu Ubuntu 12.04, o prompt sempre mostra apenas o seguinte (não importa em qual caminho eu esteja):

-bash-4.2#

Eu acho que é porque .bashrc ou .bash_profile está configurado incorretamente.

Meu .bashrc é o seguinte:

Como faço para restaurar as configurações padrão (para mostrar o diretório atual) no meu shell?

Isso é normalmente especificado no arquivo /etc/bash.bashrc nos sistemas Ubuntu. A variável de ambiente $PS1 define os valores do prompt do shell. Este é o prompt padrão do Ubuntu:

PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w\$ '

Copie essa linha no seu /etc/bash.bashrc (talvez já esteja lá, mas tenha comentado). No entanto, depois disso, abra um novo processo bash e seu prompt deverá ser configurado novamente.
