Ontem minha instalação do Linux Mint 17.1 (Rebecca) começou a ficar instável. A tela de login do X tinha alguns artefatos visuais aqui e ali e todo o sistema ficou sem resposta logo após o login no desktop do Cinnamon. Os problemas pareciam se apresentar ao animar o ícone "latejante" no lançador ou ao animar a abertura de uma janela.
Agora eu não consigo entrar em Canela. Apenas uma tela preta com cursor depois de inserir minhas credenciais. Eventualmente, até o cursor parará de responder aos movimentos do mouse.
Outras vezes, a tela de login animada será interrompida.
Às vezes, posso mudar para um TTY diferente e fazer login no CLI. Não há problemas aqui. Eu gerenciei apt-get update e apt-get upgrade . Depois de novamente não conseguir fazer o Cinnamon, eu entrei no CLI como root e execute dmesg (cuja saída pareceu suspeitamente lenta para renderizar). As últimas mensagens me deixaram profundamente perturbado:

Eu tenho uma Palit GTX 465 e estou usando o driver nvidia proprietário. A máquina (uma auto-construção) tem mais de 6 anos e sempre executou o Linux de alguma forma ou de outra; esta edição do Mint por talvez 2 anos agora.
Eu não quero comprar uma nova placa GFX se isso não for problema, então alguém pode me dar alguma dica sobre diagnósticos? Ou alguém pode me dizer com certeza que é um problema de hardware?
