Permissões de leitura / gravação para o daemon em execução como não raiz

Eu desenvolvi um pequeno aplicativo python que estou tentando daemonizar. Eu usei este guia e modificou ligeiramente o exemplo. Eu tenho o seguinte script:

O aplicativo lê / grava em um arquivo shelve para armazenar informações de configuração. Quando eu executo o script da linha de comando como normal, está tudo bem. Quando tento iniciar o serviço, recebo um erro de permissão negada ao tentar ler o arquivo shelve:

As permissões do arquivo shelve e o diretório pai são atualmente rwxr - r -.

Como faço para executar corretamente as permissões daemon / set para que eu possa ler / gravar neste arquivo (e em geral para qualquer arquivo com permissões de usuário r / w?)

Estou executando isso em uma instalação Raspbian em um Raspberry Pi Zero.
