Estou usando o lightdm. E eu compilei o lightdm-webkit-greeter da fonte.
Aqui estão minhas configurações do /etc/lightdmlightdm.conf:

Quando eu começo meu laptop, ele só vai para uma tela preta com um pequeno cursor piscando em vez de iniciar lightdm.

Se eu executar o comando lightdm-webkit-greeter do cli, ele abrirá o interface doce em uma janela gtk com alguns avisos no terminal.
Eu também instalei o pacote plymouth, só para que você saiba, depois de encontrar um erro relacionado a isso no arquivo lightdm.log.
