yum instalar problema de dependência R (RHEL 5.5)

Estou tentando instalar remotamente o R em um sistema RHEL 5.5, mas continuo recebendo um problema de dependência

yum -y install R

resulta no seguinte

 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
 You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
                        package-cleanup --dupes
                        rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
The program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.

Eu tentei yum clean all como solução possível, mas resulta no mesmo problema. Eu também tentei instalar as dependências separadamente, mas elas não parecem existir.

Como posso resolver isso e por que o gerenciador de pacotes acha que falta uma dependência quando ela não existe?

O CentOS 5.5 é bem antigo. Ele foi lançado em 2010. A EPEL tem como alvo o último lançamento em grande escala, o que significa que ele atinge 5.11. Você está muito atrasado e esperando que a EPEL ofereça suporte a você.

Meu palpite é que você precisa atualizar. Pode haver alguns pacotes que você depende desse navio apenas com versões mais recentes do 5.x.

Um lembrete de que 5.x parou de receber correções em 2014 e será completamente EOL em menos de um ano. Você deve ter algum tipo de plano de atualização.
