tmux (ou tela, a alternativa mais antiga) é ótima para isso.
O tmux permite fazer divisões horizontais e verticais.
Você provavelmente desejará personalizar o tmux, por exemplo a maioria das pessoas gosta de cmd-a sobre cmd-b como a tecla "prefixo".
Eu uso as seguintes configurações do arquivo ~ / .tmuf.conf para que ele funcione melhor para mim:
