Executando aplicativos X11 em uma tela com profundidade de bits limitada

Essa é uma consulta esotérica, mas eu quero exportar a tela do X11 do meu Raspberry Pi para um Mac antigo, capaz de apenas 256 cores. Tudo bem, até onde vai, mas as cores são tão desconfiguradas no monitor do Mac que os aplicativos não podem ser usados e são irreconhecíveis. É possível configurar o Gnome para usar no máximo 16 cores (só para garantir)? Existe um tema para o Gnome que eu poderia usar para fazer o que eu quero? Ou, melhor ainda, posso desinstalar o Gnome e rodar um cliente de e-mail como Sylpheed usando algo como twm?

Você pode pedir ao servidor X para usar apenas a profundidade de 8 bits. No seu arquivo /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
