Por que não consigo entrar no meu console Debian?

Eu normalmente faço logon na minha máquina Debian com o nome de usuário "debian" Hoje, descobri que não consigo fazer login com esse nome de usuário, mas posso fazer login como "root".

Informações possivelmente relevantes:

Eu reiniciei duas vezes, mas ainda tenho o mesmo problema.

Depois de fazer login como root, recebo:

O que está errado e como posso corrigi-lo?

Por algum motivo, meu ~/.Xauthority não pertence ao usuário debian . Alterar a propriedade permitiu que eu fizesse login:

chown -R debian  /home/debian/.Xauthority
