$ HOME no prompt do shell

Mudei meu nome de usuário usando esta instrução e agora, no caminho atual do prompt do shell, não vejo mais $ HOME para ser abreviado com um til assim que eu mudo de diretório.

Por exemplo, quando eu abro o gnome-terminal vejo ~$ como caminho atual, mas assim que eu digito algo como cd a_folder , ele se transforma em algo como /home/my_username/a_folder$ .

BTW cd ~ funciona bem e echo ~ retorna meu diretório inicial. Eu também uso o Ubuntu 16.04.
