Make kernel: a receita para o alvo falhou

Estou tentando entrar nos kernels linux e encontrei um bom livro que queria ler. O requisito inicial é um kernel prontamente construído que estou tentando alcançar por alguns dias agora. A partir de agora, estou executando o Debian Squeeze com um kernel 2.6.32-5, que também é a versão que eu gostaria de "recompilar". A configuração está em uma VM executando o Ubuntu como host. Eu também tenho espaço suficiente (~ 21GB).

O último manual que eu segui é “Compilando um novo Kernel” nas notas de lançamento do Debian jessie .

Então eu fui ao meu pacote de kernel descompactado que eu peguei do kernel.org e rodei

make-kpkg clean
fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --revision=1.0.custom kernel_image

Eu tenho experiência em uso do UNIX (tenho usado o Linux há alguns anos), mas não tenho idéia sobre os kernels até o momento. Alguém capaz de ajudar?
