comportamento estranho do VIM

Eu instalei recentemente uma versão mínima da edição do Fedora 23 Server. Eu uso VIM como editor, e notei um comportamento estranho quando edito qualquer arquivo de texto que não é um novo arquivo durante.

Sempre que eu abro qualquer arquivo de texto existente com o VIM, é como se ele executasse automaticamente a seqüência de teclas sg<esc> . Esta é a primeira vez que vejo algo assim.

NOTA: tudo isso está acontecendo em uma sessão ssh.

Quais poderiam ser as causas de um comportamento tão estranho?
