Como corrijo minhas atualizações e instalações? Eu suponho que algum problema surge devido à falha em alcançar o servidor archive.ubuntu.com/ , mas apesar desse caso, podemos fazer alguma coisa?
Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (13.10) foi lançado em julho de 2014, como mostra aqui . Você está recebendo o erro porque os arquivos não podem ser encontrados (o erro 404 no final da saída apt-get update significa que o arquivo não foi encontrado).
Se você olhar para o repositório no link , você notará que saucy não está listado lá - daí o erro 404.
Existe alguma razão pela qual você ainda está usando o Saucy? Esta versão está em fim de vida desde julho de 2014. Se você ainda deseja instalar pacotes a partir dessa versão, você precisa apontar seus fontes de pacotes para old-releases.ubuntu.com em sources.list.
No entanto, eu strongmente recomendo a atualização para uma versão atualizada do Ubuntu. A versão atual do LTS é 14.04 Trusty, a atual versão não-LTS é 15.10 Wily.

Se você realmente quer fazer isso apesar de todos os avisos nas outras respostas, você pode tentar abrir o /etc/apt/sources.list e todos os arquivos de texto em /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ com root direitos e substituir todas as menções de LANGUAGECODE.archive.ubuntu.com com old-releases.ubuntu.com .
Como você não pode encontrar nada em sources.list, deve haver algo em sources.list.d, espero. (Eu não uso o Linux Mint, então não posso confirmar.)
