Acrescentar à lista de reprodução da linha de comando

Suponha que eu tenha uma instância do smplayer executando uma playlist. Existe uma maneira de adicionar vídeos da linha de comando para essa lista de reprodução? Qualquer outro media player em que eu possa fazer isso?

smplayer -add-to-playlist file

Da página do manual:

-add-to-playlist
If there is another instance running, the media will be added to   that instance's playlist. If there is no  other  instance,
this option will be ignored and the files will be opened in a new instance.
