Sim, as GPUs antigas não podem ser usadas no OpenGL com os modernos lançamentos do Mesa. O suporte deles caiu desde 2012. Aqui está o tópico relevante da mesa-dev .
A primeira versão do Mesa sem drivers herdados é Mesa 8.0 .
Hoje eu tentei lançar o Kubuntu 12.04 LTS no meu HP OmniBook XE3 com o chip de vídeo S3 Savage IX-MV apenas para descobrir o seguinte:

No log, parece que tudo foi inicializado corretamente. Mas ainda tenho renderização de software em vez de HW acelerado. É claro que o lançamento glxgears
confirma que a renderização de software está sendo feita, ou seja, recebo 0.68 FPS no modo de tela cheia.
Então, minha pergunta é: o suporte para a aceleração de HW nesses chips foi completamente descartado pela Mesa? Ou eu tenho algum erro de configuração em algum lugar?
