Na verdade, o problema veio de um antigo remanescente do instalador da NVIDIA:
/usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.so.96.43.11
A remoção de todos os arquivos NVIDIA órfãos resolveu o problema!
Eu atualizei para o Slackware atual (do 14.1) e tudo funciona perfeitamente, exceto o OpenGL. O Fglrx 15.302 não compila contra o kernel em execução (4.4.5) então decidi ficar com o driver livre. No entanto, não funciona de forma alguma, embora tudo esteja bem:
