Um pôster mencionou que eles acabaram usando rm -f para remover, pois o método acima não funcionou, mas isso também não era recomendado.

Uma atualização: acabei fazendo backup de todos os kernels 2.6.x antigos e os excluí. Isso se livrou do aviso "/ boot está usando 98%". No entanto, eu tentei fazer um
apt-get -f install
