O Eclipse não será iniciado após a atualização para 16.04 LTS

Acabei de atualizar para 16.04 a partir de 14.04 LTS e, de repente, o Eclipse não será iniciado. Aqui está o arquivo de log do Eclipse:

Tentar instalar a barra de rolagem overlay diz que já é o mais recente. Tentando overlay-scrollbar: i386 dá esta mensagem:

Eu também tentei fazer downgrade do Java para 1.7 usando sudo update-java-alternatives , o que também não remove o erro inicial

Sim. É isso aí. O Eclipse 3.8 não parece funcionar com o java 8. Então você precisa instalar o eclipse 4.2 (Luna) se precisar usar o Java 8. E eu prefiro usar o Oracle Java ao invés de abrir o jdk. Vá em frente com o eclipse 4.2 e o oracle java 8.

Bem, eu recomendo que você instale o Oracle JDK 8 de 64 bits e faça o download do arquivo tar do Eclipse 4.2 de 64 bits do site oficial e extraia-o e clique duas vezes no arquivo executável do eclipse.
