O Xampp não inicia o MySQL?

Quando vou ao meu painel de controle do Xampp e pressiono "EXECUTE" para o MySQL ele se recusa a executar. É uma instalação completamente precisa e limpa / fresca. Eu estou correndo 10.10. Aqui está o log de erros:

Tente executar o MySQL normal (obtido via Synaptic). Realmente, não há muito benefício em rodar o XAMPP no Ubuntu, quando você pode facilmente instalar os componentes em sua máquina e obter facilmente a funcionalidade igual ou melhorada.

@jgbelacqua fornece um link para um problema com o UTF-8 e sugere a remoção da referência UTF-8. Eu não li o link dele cuidadosamente o suficiente para saber se ele estava sugerindo usar algum outro conjunto de caracteres, mas se é assim, é um mau conselho. O MySQL certamente suporta o UTF-8 e existem muitas boas razões para você usá-lo também. Se a versão do MySQL fornecida com o XAMPP não puder lidar com isso, então o XAMPP é defeituoso e deve ser abandonado.

Por que não instalar o servidor LAMP? O xampp é muito buggy e eu tenho problemas com ele em todas as plataformas. Os últimos lançamentos têm problemas muito sérios com o MySql, simplesmente não está funcionando!

apenas faça

sudo apt-get install php5 php5-mysql phpmyadmin mysql-server-5.1 apache2

e pronto.
