Vamos ver algumas das mensagens.

Note, selecting 'mate-desktop-environment' instead of 'mate'

apt-get está substituindo o nome do pacote mate por mate-desktop-environment . Em vez de assumir que o pacote é chamado mate , você poderia ter olhado para apt-cache search mate .

 The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 mate-desktop-environment : Depends: mate-desktop-environment-core (= 1.20.0+2~16.04.york0) but it is not going to be installed

Isso diz que o pacote que você pediu para instalar ( mate-desktop-environment , era mate ) depende de um pacote chamado mate-desktop-environment-core . "Depende", neste contexto significa "tenho que ter, não funciona sem ele".

Para corrigir apenas este problema, faça:

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment mate-desktop-environment-core

No entanto, todas as linhas Recommends: recomendam outros pacotes que tornam mate mais útil. Você pode simplesmente adicionar os pacotes que deseja na linha de comando. Estou supondo que você esteja tentando instalar os pacotes usando os repositórios ppa:jonathonf/mate-1.20 ou ppa:jonathonf/mate-1.20-gtk3.22 .

Descobri que a causa raiz dos erros acima é que apenas versões mais antigas do GTK estavam disponíveis.

Descobri que a execução dos comandos incluía todos os pacotes necessários para permitir uma instalação completa do ambiente de área de trabalho mate.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/mate-1.20-gtk3.22
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/gtk3.22
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment
