Como o Xorg se recusa a gerar um arquivo xorg.conf para mim?

Eu tenho um monitor DisplayLink que estou tentando adicionar ao meu desktop Ubuntu. Depois de conectá-lo, a tela fica completamente verde, o que eu entendo significa que o módulo do kernel do DisplayLink está instalado e pode interagir com o dispositivo.

Adicionar o monitor ao meu xorg.conf não deve ser muito difícil, exceto que é no /etc/X11/xorg.conf . Aparentemente eu tenho que gerar um - então é isso que eu tentei fazer com o seguinte comando:

Xorg -configure

O driver de vídeo do vmware (vmwgfx) é um driver de adição externo do VMWare, não suportado pelo núcleo X.org. Xorg -configure é válido apenas para os drivers oficiais principais.
