Parece que o kernel mais recente resolveu esse problema. Realmente rodando em:

Deve funcionar a partir de 4,10 mas eu não testei tanto.
Eu substituo o HD no meu thinkpad, depois disso, tenho o seguinte problema a cada 2 ou 3 dias, resultando em um volume / partição somente "raiz" ou "inicial".
A versão do kernel é:
4.11.1-041101-generic
E o SSD é:
nvme Intel 600p NVMe SSD 1TB
Ainda estou investigando o problema, mas não encontrei nada óbvio.
