Eu tentei usar o modem USB One Touch 4G da Alcatel em um Ubuntu 14.04 recém-instalado, mas sem sorte. O transportador é o Optimus Kanguru de Portugal.
Após sugestões on-line, instalei usb-modeswitch , usb-modeswitch-data , wvdial e comgt .
Quando eu o conecto, o applet NetworkManager adiciona a opção para ativar a Banda Larga Móvel. Eu o habilito, mas quando tento criar uma nova conexão, a caixa de combinação não possui dispositivos. Apenas a opção "Qualquer dispositivo". Eu configurei de qualquer maneira com uma infinidade de todos os APNs possíveis que eu pude encontrar (incl. None), mas quando tento conectar, ele imediatamente falha.
Seguindo as instruções on-line, eu também tentei me conectar com wvdial , executando:
sudo wvdialconf
sudo wvdial
com o seguinte resultado:

Waiting for carrier.
Timed out while dialing. Trying again.

(e assim por diante ...)
Eu também tentei usar APNs diferentes em /etc/wvdial.conf sem sucesso.
lsusb mostra o dispositivo como:
