Unidade USB girando, mas não aparecendo no fdisk -l

Acidentalmente, instalei uma unidade externa Seagatte USB com muitos dados importantes nela. As conexões estavam bem, mas "parou de responder". Eu fecho tudo e reinicio. Agora, quando eu conecto a unidade, os relatórios do dmesg:

Mas o disco sdb não aparece em fdisk -l e sudo mount /dev/sdb /home/tcj/Desktop/seagate

trava e gparted "scans" para sempre, mas não encontra a unidade seagate.

Alguma idéia de como posso recuperar meu disco?

Eu só tive um problema semelhante ao tentar dual boot windows 7 com o Ubuntu 14.04 e depois de vários problemas, eu finalmente descobri que o HDD estava morrendo quando na seleção de unidade do Windows parte da instalação mostrou um dos discos off-line.

Não sou especialista, mas se a sua unidade tiver idade suficiente, isso pode ser uma possibilidade. Eu vi um par de threads em montagem forçada, a fim de pegar todos os arquivos que ainda estão nele que você pode querer / precisar.

Três outras coisas:

1. conecte algo a essa porta USB para ver se ainda funciona
2. Verifique se o cabo USB está totalmente conectado
3. se você tiver um dispositivo que use o mesmo tipo de cabo, conecte-o e veja se ele é exibido
