Hoje comecei a atualizar para 13.10 apenas para retornar muito mais tarde e perceber que o gerenciador de atualização ainda estava em execução.
Parece estar congelado e estou relutante em pressionar Ctrl + C . Eu não posso lançar o nautilus usando o ícone no lançador. Quando eu tento executá-lo através do terminal, é isso que acontece:
$ nautilus

As minhas impressoras não aparecem quando tento imprimir. Não sei se estes são sintomas do mesmo problema. Devo deixar o gerenciamento de atualizações continuar a ser executado ou devo desligá-lo?

Atualizar
Depois de pressionar ctrl + c ao parar o gerenciador de atualização, cliquei com o botão direito do mouse no ícone correspondente ao upgrade e selecionei Quit . Então a atualização me levou:
Cancelar a atualização em andamento?

Selecionei Cancel Upgrade e agora o upgrade está congelado (não está preso como antes). Eu não sei o nome do processo, então não posso matá-lo através do gnome-system-monitor.
Além disso, notei que as barras de menu desapareceram das janelas abertas.
Atualizar
Eu reiniciei lightdm com sudo service lightdm restart e isso aparentemente resolveu os problemas gráficos da época. O dpkg ainda não rodaria, já que outro processo o estava usando. Então o computador ficou extremamente lento e congelou (senti como se estivesse usando windows!). Eu decidi alt + sys rec + R E I S U B .
Quando o sistema tentou inicializar, houve a seguinte mensagem:
Filesystem check or mount failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and continue booting after re-trying
filesystems. Any further errors will be ignored.
Não importa o que eu faça, ctrl + d retorna a seguinte mensagem:

Eu tentei inicializar no modo de recuperação e selecionei para consertar o sistema usando o dpkg e ele ficou preso no mesmo local em que a atualização estava travada.
Voltando ao shell de manutenção, tentei:
$ fsck

Agora, estou usando o 12.10 por meio de um thumbdrive que eu tinha por aí. Tentei reparar o sistema de arquivos usando:

Eu me certifiquei que a partição foi desmontada antes de tentar isso, é claro.
Depois de tentar mount -o remount, rw / e usar o dpkg --configure -a recomendado no shell de manutenção, ele parece continuar atualizando de onde parou (o que fez com que passasse onde estava preso em tentativas anteriores). No entanto, parece ter abortado devido a muitos erros. Eu reiniciei o sistema e ele inicializou bem (eu estava feliz naquele momento). Eu abri um terminal e corri sudo apt-get install e enquanto fazia a coisa todo o sistema congelava. Eu reiniciei e não iria arrancar a partir da unidade.
