Eu obtive esse E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. -problem resolvido removendo a linha deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release amd64 (20111012)]/ dists/oneiric/main/binary-i386/ do arquivo /etc/apt/sources.list .

Primeiro eu tentei remover cd-rom-thing das configurações do gerenciador de atualização, porque parecia ser motivo para erro e geralmente propunha consertar o problema, mas isso não ajudou, então achei a dependência de cd-rom dessas fontes. list-file, removido e apt-get update funciona novamente bem!

Oi eu tive um problema semelhante sobre isso e como eu já postei aqui em outro post (" Falha ao buscar "404 Not Found, por quê? ) Eu escrevi os passos usados para resolver esse problema (pelo menos para mim) no meu blog
