Ubuntu 12.10 - como definir a resolução para 1024x768 e taxa correta? usando a linha de comando quando o sistema inicia

Eu tenho este código a seguir, onde minha saída VGA está sempre mostrando fora do intervalo. Como posso resolver isso?

$ cvt 1024 768
$ xrandr --newmode shvga 74.50 1024 1072 1176 1328  768 771 775 798
$ xrandr --addmode VGA-1 shvga
$ xrandr --output VGA-1 --mode shvga

Eu também apliquei xrandr - saída VGA-1 - shvga --mode 60 ou 70, mas nenhum está ajudando. Alguma solução permanente?
