Você precisa instalar o usb_modeswitch para mudar o dispositivo do armazenamento para o modo modem. Ele deve reconhecer seu dispositivo assim que você ligá-lo na próxima vez com a versão atual (que não é a única nos repositórios do Ubuntu, mas ainda pode funcionar).
