O Ubuntu fica lento mesmo depois que o processo intensivo de cpu é finalizado

Depois de uma chamada de vídeo do Skype ou do uso do VirtualBox, o Ubuntu fica lento, mesmo depois que o processo é finalizado. O htop em execução revela que os processos que usavam pouca CPU agora usam 30% de CPU (ou seja, Compiz, Firefox, Python e Skype, mas tenho certeza de que existem outros), a ponto de todos os meus núcleos estarem em 99% . Tudo o que posso fazer daqui é reiniciar.

Alguma idéia de por que isso está acontecendo? Estou executando o Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit em 3.7 GiB de memória, CPU Intel® Core ™ i3 M 330 @ 2.13GHz × 4, driver gráfico VESA: M92. Não sei por que estou executando o VESA, instalei o fglrx, mas suponho que seja uma questão diferente.

UPDATE Então eu repassei isso depois de jogar um vídeo do youtube e fazer o backup ao mesmo tempo. Eu decidi executar unity --replace Recebi o seguinte erro:

Então corri unity --reset e olhei para o htop. Parece que um "compiz -replace", Firefox, Skype, htop, Xorg e rythmbox estavam usando uma quantidade anormal de CPU, e tudo estava um pouco atrasado. Top exibe o seguinte:

Dê uma olhada em esta página ; Como você está usando o driver VESA, acho que esse é o seu caso. Verifique a saída de glxinfo | grep render e se ele diz OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer , então esse comportamento é normal até você usar o driver de vídeo apropriado.
