Problemas de dependência após a atualização de 10.10 para 12.10 [duplicado]

Após uma atualização de distro do Ubuntu Server 10.10 para 12.10, recebo mensagens de erro tentando instalar qualquer programa.

Quando eu corro apt-get install firefox

Sou muito novo no Linux, por isso gostaria que as respostas fossem o mais simples possível e explicassem o que é o quê e porquê.

Os comandos usados para atualizar a distribuição foram:

sudo sed -i -e 's/archive.ubuntu.com\|security.ubuntu.com/old-releases.ubuntu.com/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade & sudo apt-get autoremove

por favor, peça qualquer informação adicional necessária.

Primeiro, você não pode atualizar de 10.10 para 12.10. Você deve passar por 11,04, 11,10, 12,04 LTS e depois aterrissar a 12,10.

Em segundo lugar, esse método de atualização é muito longo e complicado, e há um monte de coisas que podem dar errado (na verdade, você chegou a esse estágio). Você precisará baixar ~ 12GiB de atualizações para chegar à versão 12.10.

Em terceiro lugar, por causa do primeiro e do segundo, será mais fácil e menos precário apenas fazer um backup de suas coisas importantes, baixar o ISO para o Ubuntu 13.04 ou 12.04 LTS a partir da página principal, gravá-lo ou criar um live usb e instale o Ubuntu. Existe um guia completo aqui sobre como fazer isso.
