isso é um monte de coisas ... eu tenho que removê-las uma por uma? irá removê-los causar algum problema? Tenho que instalá-los um por um novamente após a atualização?

Como ZiglioNZ diz, a primeira coisa que você precisa fazer é remover o repositório xorg-edgers:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers
Um dos meus laptops funcionou depois disso. No entanto, em outro laptop, isso não parece resolver o problema. Verificando o arquivo de log /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log Percebi que o erro não havia mudado, ainda estava vendo uma falha como:

Então, eu simplesmente desinstalei o pacote ofensivo e tentei a atualização novamente:
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-all
sudo do-release-upgrade
e a atualização conseguiu continuar com sucesso desta vez.
Uma vez que a atualização foi concluída, eu tinha um sistema em funcionamento, mas aparentemente nenhum driver X. Então, a primeira coisa que fiz depois do login foi adicionar o ppa do xorg-edgers de volta e instalar o driver necessário:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
