Você tentou purgar mandos-cliente?
$ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge mandos-client
Isso deve remover esse pacote de maneira limpa, para que você possa instalá-lo mais tarde.
Toda vez que eu instalo ou desinstalo usando o Ubuntu Software Center, recebo a mensagem:
Falha na operação do pacote A instalação ou remoção do pacote de software falhou.
Eu recebo isso para TODOS os downloads, já que o download termina, mas quando eu clico em 'ok' parece que o que eu baixei ainda está lá

agora, parece que nada está dando errado, tentei alguns outros comandos, como:
sudo apt-get -f install sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get auto clean
Eu também segui as instruções aqui mas sem sorte.
Isso não começou a acontecer até que a remoção usando as instruções para não seja livre o suficiente espaço ao atualizar
