Eu mesmo descobri a solução. O BIOS deve ser configurado para acomodar o "Windows XP" e não o "Outro" SO. Só então funciona.
Estou tentando configurar meu próprio servidor doméstico - sem cabeça. É uma máquina Fit-PC2 (especificações técnicas completas aqui: link ) com HDD de 160GB, por isso tem configurações limitadas da BIOS e infame placa gráfica Poulsbo. Eu matei dois dias para colocar o Debian Squeezy nele. A instalação foi bem, mas o GRUB não passará de "Welcome to GRUB!"

Eu inicializei o LiveCD para editar /etc/default/grub
para ativar o terminal de texto e executei o sudo update-grub2 posteriormente. Nada mudou, nem consegui encontrar grub.cfg
dentro de /boot
! Debian não inicializaria.
Então, experimentei o Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. Eu instalei com o LVM (uma grande partição ext3 para o sistema principal e swap de 2GB. Eu usei ext3 aqui propositalmente pois li que há um bug no GRUB que pode causar problemas similares no ext4) sob o grupo LVM "technodrome". O mesmo erro do Debian. Depois que ligo a máquina, fico apenas com a tela preta. Ao manter pressionada a tecla Shift, vejo a mensagem "GRUB loading"
. É isso.
Mais uma vez, usei o LiveCD para montar /dev/sda
e chroot para tentar o truque de configuração do terminal, mas desta vez toda a minha unidade de 160GB mostrou no Live 10.10 do Ubuntu uma partição de 255 MB. Eu não consegui montar. Estou muito confuso e sem opções.
