Conexão encerrada pelo host remoto após pressionar a guia para o preenchimento automático

Estou conectando a uma instalação de caixa virtual do Ubuntu 15.10 usando putty:

Welcome to Ubuntu 15.10 (GNU/Linux 4.2.0-22-generic x86_64)

Se simplesmente cd folde [tab] uma janela é aberta

"Connection closed by remote host"

Eu não tenho absolutamente nenhuma ideia do que está errado e como corrigir isso e de onde isso vem de repente.

Editar: nova informação: isso não parece acontecer como root.

O que tentei até agora:

  • Ubuntu atualizado
  • Testei o mobaxterm e o putty simples
  • Putty para qualquer outra máquina funciona bem
  • Não é devido à falta de memória: MemTotal: 9996524 kB, MemFree: 9422540 kB, MemDisponível: 9830548 kB
  • Iniciar outro bash usando exec bash fará com que o problema apareça com menos frequência.

O problema foi o seguinte:

Estou pesquisando alguns scripts para configurar meu ambiente. Um deles contém

set -e

Tudo o que causar um erro interromperá a execução do bash.

Lições aprendidas: nunca set -e em .bashrc.

Editar: Como NicoMinsk apontou, é possível definir -e no final de bashrc sem problemas.
