Estou enfrentando dificuldades na instalação do meu modem USB no Ubuntu 16.04. Na maioria das vezes eu conecto meu modem de banda larga USB, ele está conectado como CD-ROM.
O que eu entendi da web foi que usb-modeswitch pode ser usado para alternar para um dispositivo USB, mas não é possível alterá-lo. Mesmo a opção 'Enable Mobile Broadband' não é mostrada no gerenciador de rede (talvez porque não seja detectada como modem).
Coisas que tentei resolver este problema com sem sorte :

Instalado sakis3g para se conectar ao modem, mas sem sorte, dá erro.
A versão usb-modemswitch e usb-modeswitch-data para a versão 14.04 foi desatualizada, pois meu modem estava funcionando nessa versão.

Eu tive o mesmo problema e corrigi-lo. Você precisa instalar o driver da Huawei para o Ubuntu.
1) Configuração
Com o resultado de lsusb no terminal (para mim, o pid da minha Huawei foi 12d1:15d2 , por exemplo) Veja thread em ubuntuforums.org
2) Faça o download dos drivers:
HUAWEI Data Cards Linux (clique em Baixar arquivo).

3) Instalação
Consulte o artigo sobre modemunlock.com
