LTSP usando um servidor Edubuntu remoto?

Estou procurando usar um cliente LTSP. Estou tentando entender a arquitetura desse sistema. O servidor principal ao qual ele se conecta precisa estar na rede local? Por exemplo, seria possível conectar um cliente LTSP a qualquer rede. Então o cliente LTSP se conecta a um servidor Edubuntu remoto que não está na rede local?

Depende do cliente. Se for um thin client típico, ele precisará receber informações da rede no início da seqüência de inicialização. Do Wiki LTSP :

If you have more than 20 users, it is recommended to use Gigabit Ethernet connected to a gigabit port on a switch for your LTSP servers. Although normal usage ranges from 0.5 to 2mbit, clients can peak quite high (70mbit), especially when watching multimedia content. Booting a thin client involves several steps. Understanding what is happening along the way will make it much easier to solve problems, should they arise. There are four basic services required to boot an LTSP thin client. They are:

1. DHCP
2. TFTP
3. NFS or NBD
4. SSH

O servidor DHCP deve ser local. É possível rotear o tráfego DHCP, mas você precisaria de acesso para configurar todos os roteadores entre o cliente e o servidor. É possível executar o serviço DHCP em um servidor diferente do servidor LTSP. Tenho experiência em executá-lo em um servidor Windows.
