Configurado PAM, mas não pode autenticar usando credenciais válidas

Estou configurando o OpenVPN e posso autenticar usando apenas a autenticação baseada em certificado. No entanto, agora quero implementar a autenticação de nome de usuário / senha. Parece que muitos dos guias e artigos, e até mesmo o artigo de suporte do OpenVPN, fornecem informações limitadas sobre como realizar isso.

Até agora, consegui adicionar a linha a seguir com sucesso a /etc/openvpn/server.conf

plugin /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openvpn/plugins/openvpn-plugin-auth-pam.so login

Eu também adicionei a seguinte linha ao arquivo client.ovpn :

auth-user-pass

Agora, quando tento conectar-me ao servidor OpenVPN, eu uso uma combinação de nome de usuário e senhas que, na verdade, é um usuário válido no sistema Ubuntu. No entanto, isso me dá um erro AUTH_FAILED.

Não consigo entender por que ele está falhando se o usuário for realmente uma conta de usuário válida no servidor Ubuntu. Eu não fiz nenhuma outra alteração em nenhum outro arquivo, já que eu não encontrei a necessidade de fazê-lo ainda com base no que eu pude pesquisar.
