Consegui resolver o problema mudando de UEFI para UEFI / BIOS.
O monitor embutido do meu laptop parece não ser reconhecido pelo Ubuntu. A tela é preta embora iluminada. Monitor externo conectado via HDMI funciona muito bem. Não importa se conectado durante a inicialização.
Meu laptop é o Samsung 670Z5E (GPU Intel AMD HD8850M + integrado). Ele roda o Ubuntu 14.04 instalado ao lado do Windows 8.1. Eu instalei o driver proprietário e o Catalyst Control Center do site da AMD, mas não faz diferença.
Qual pode ser o problema?
