Eu tenho um servidor Centos 6.5, executando a virtualização QEMU-KVM:

Existem 3 convidados, com configuração hw idêntica:

Os convidados estão executando o Apache e o MySQL.
No host, há apenas alguns scripts de backup e manutenção ao lado dos virtuais, nada mais.
Sempre depois de alguns dias, os problemas começam a aparecer. A carga sobre os convidados aumenta aleatoriamente até cerca de 150, com 10-15% em roubar tempo de CPU. No host, a carga está em torno de 38 a 40, cerca de 30 a 40% no tempo da CPU do usuário, 40 a 50% no tempo da CPU do sistema.
Os processos que mais consomem a CPU no host nesse momento são os precessos do Qemu de convidados virtuais e logo após eles estão o kswapd0 e o kswapd1, com 100% de uso da CPU.
Uso da memória nesse momento:
- RAM total 378,48 GB
- RAM usada 330,82 GB
- RAM livre de 47,66 GB
- total de SWAP 500,24 MB
- SWAP usado 497,13 MB
- sem SWAP 3192 kB
mais 10-20 GB de RAM em buffers.
Assim, do ponto de uso da memória, não deve haver nenhum problema. Mas o trabalho pesado dos processos kswapd indica falta de memória, também pontos de swap completos nessa direção (e quando eu ligo alternadamente, ele é preenchido em poucos instantes). E de vez em quando, OOM-killer mata algum processo:

Então eu inicio o convidado morto e a partir desse momento, tudo está OK, por alguns dias .. Com o mesmo uso de memória que tem antes do problema:

- RAM livre de 42,33 GB

- SWAP usado 344,55 MB

É possível que o servidor de alguma forma conte mal a memória? Ou há algo que me falta?
Uma coisa vem à minha mente, esse host coloca toda a memória livre em buffers e cache e, em seguida, sofre de falta de memória (invoca OOM-killer)? Mas isso, eu acho, não deveria acontecer, certo? Além disso, isso não explica o comportamento antes do assassinato.

Parece que toda a memória "livre" é gasta em buffers.
Após dicas de @Matthew sobre fragmentação de memória, eu compactei a memória e também baixei os caches (para liberar 60 GBs em buffers) no Host, com esses comandos:

O problema foi resolvido reduzindo a memória alocada para os convidados. Agora, há 3 convidados com 80 GB de RAM cada, deixando cerca de 150 GB de RAM para o sistema host:
