Parece que está voltando a authorized_keys2
por motivos de compatibilidade quando não consegue encontrar um arquivo authorized_keys
válido. Verifique se o seu arquivo authorized_keys está corretamente formado.
Acabei de enviar minha chave pública para um servidor, as permissões garantidas estão corretas e, quando tento registrar, simplesmente a recuso.
depois de ativar o log de DEBUG em sshd_config eu recebo:

continue tentando o authorized_keys2 (que eu estava obsoleto em todos os lugares) mas ele abre o authorized_keys em algum momento (o arquivo correto com as minhas chaves) e depois não diz nada sobre isso e volta para o authorized_keys2
o que há de errado aqui?
Eu tenho no meu sshd_config:
PubkeyAuthentication yes
AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys
e não há nenhuma string authorized_keys2 nesse arquivo em nenhum lugar. E sim, o sshd foi reiniciado antes dos testes.
Acho que posso usar o authorized_keys2, mas quero entender o que está acontecendo aqui. Alguma pista?

pode acessar o diretório .ssh/authorized_keys
? Qual sistema operacional você está executando? Algumas distribuições com o SELinux ativado podem proibir o sshd de ler .ssh/authorized_keys
. Você pode restaurar isso usando:
restorecon -R -V /home/xxx/.ssh/
