Portanto, o virtualbox não se dá bem com xen . Como faço para matar / desinstalar / remover xen do terminal para que o processo DKMS seja bem-sucedido?

Você precisa de purge all xen-hypervisor pacotes relacionados:
sudo apt-get purge 'xen-hypervisor*'
Agora, remova os pacotes que foram instalados como dependências, mas que não são mais necessários após a ação de remoção acima:
sudo apt-get autoremove
De uma só vez:
sudo apt-get purge 'xen-hypervisor*' && sudo apt-get autoremove
