Você precisará ajustar o número de processos filhos para algo menor. Dependendo da sua configuração, isso pode estar localizado no arquivo httpd-mpm.conf ou httpd.conf.
Percebi que meu site estava inativo hoje e, quando eu fiz o ssh em minha caixa e executei o top
, percebi que a carga do meu servidor era muito alta. Eu rapidamente desliguei o apache e esperei até que a carga caísse, mas assim que iniciei o apache, a carga e os processos começaram a subir muito rapidamente. O site é um blog wordpress básico.

Alguma sugestão de como eu posso depurar isso ainda mais?
EDITAR:
Eu pensei em adicionar isso também. Eu reduzi MaxClients
de 30 para 10 conforme sugestão de @nochkin e a queda de carga para cerca de 8,0.
