Obrigado a @dirkt . O problema era de outro processo - i3bar - que tentava exibir muito o tempo todo. Eu investiguei um pouco na configuração e descobri o gargalo.
Meu uso da CPU é de quase 90% + Depois de investigar a saída do htop eu vejo, há um processo com este comando seguinte, que leva muito uso cpu
