Podemos mudar pacotes no Linux do zero?

Question

Eu tentei compilar o Linux por meio do Linux a partir do zero versão 7.5 e não consigo compilar pacotes porque, como eu percebi e googled-los, eles têm alguns bugs, por exemplo, eu não poderia compilar gcc 4.8. 2 mas gcc 4.9. 1 compilado muito bem, então minhas perguntas são:

Posso substituir alguns dos pacotes por pacotes mais antigos ou mais recentes? Isso causa algum problema no futuro?

Once you've built a system "by the book", you have a stable knowledge base from which to experiment to your heart's content (or pain, as is often the case.)
