Xorg falha ao usar o driver proprietário da nvidia

Recentemente, eu tinha instalado uma nova placa gráfica, a Nvidia GeForce 9600GT. Meu PC está executando o Debian 9:

Depois, instalei o driver nvidia proprietário, nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver, de repositório estável. O problema é que, quando eu startx como um usuário, ele mostra a minha área de trabalho por um segundo, depois falha, tudo que vejo é tela preta, monitor led está piscando (como se não houvesse sinal). X não está respondendo em Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, botão de energia também não está funcionando, leds no teclado também está desligado, então eu tenho que segurá-lo para o desligamento. Mas quando eu startx como uma raiz, ele começa bem, não há problema, mas se eu lançar algum jogo, por exemplo Urban Terror, ele joga por 5 ou 10 minutos, então falha do mesmo jeito.

Eu acredito que o problema é relacionado ao driver, porque eu também tenho o Debian 8 sem nenhum driver nvidia-legacy em outro disco e ele roda sem nenhum problema.

Um dos relatórios de erros diz que funciona com o kernel 4.7. Eu não pude tentar - não mais no repositório.
