A aplicação Java é bloqueada após a reprodução do som

Nosso aplicativo Java reproduz sons curtos de notificação periodicamente (em resposta a ações do usuário). Em alguns hardward, nosso aplicativo irá bloquear após o terceiro ou quarto som curto. Temos que pkill java para recuperar.

Temos o aplicativo instalado em cerca de 40 computadores. Todos estão executando o Linux. Metade tem o Kubuntu 12.04 instalado, metade tem o Linux Mint 11 instalado. Todas as máquinas do Linux Mint 11 funcionam bem e o aplicativo Java reproduz o som sem travar.

Inicialmente (a partir do lançamento de 12.04) todas as máquinas do Kubuntu também funcionaram bem.

Em algum momento, após uma atualização, as máquinas do Kubuntu começaram a travar quando o som foi tocado. Se desativarmos a opção de notificação sonora em nosso aplicativo, isso é uma solução alternativa. O aplicativo não será bloqueado. Mas os usuários querem o som.

Quando descobrimos o problema, paramos de executar atualizações nas máquinas do Kubuntu e todas aquelas sem atualizações (de meses atrás) continuam a reproduzir o som do nosso aplicativo sem o congelamento do aplicativo.

Mesmo nas máquinas atualizadas do Kubuntu, o problema de bloqueio não ocorre em todo o hardware. Por exemplo, em um tablet Thinkpad X220, o som em nosso aplicativo funciona sem problemas. Mas em um ThinkPad E430, ativar o som em nosso aplicativo faz com que nosso aplicativo congele.

Não podemos descobrir o padrão. O que está causando os bloqueios em um Linux recente e em algum hardware, enquanto o Linux mais antigo está bem em todo o hardware que usamos?

Já obtive os melhores resultados para reproduzir som em Java no Linux com o sun.audio.AudioStream e o sun.audio.AudioPlayer. Essas são classes "internas" e não recomendadas, mas funcionaram melhor do que qualquer outra coisa para mim (por muitos anos). Até o problema que provocou essa questão.

Minha nova solução é apenas isso: Runtime.getRuntime().exec(mediaPlayerCommand + fileName);

Para o media player, posso usar play no OpenSuse ou mplayer no Ubuntu. Acabei de colocar esse comando no meu arquivo de configuração no sistema operacional de destino e ele funciona muito bem.
