Por que o Composer não é atualizado?

Estou usando o Ubuntu 16.04 LTS amd64. Eu instalei o LAMP (php5.6, apache2, mysql) e o Composer. Eu baixei meu projeto laravel do github. Eu gostaria de atualizar o Composer para iniciar o servidor local php artisan serve . Mas quando eu gostaria de executar localhost , o terminal diz:

Você precisa instalar a extensão php dom.

sudo apt-get install php-xml

Mas como você ainda está usando o php5.6 ...

sudo apt-get install php5.6-xml

.. fará o truque.

Poder-se-ia instalar os pacotes necessários 1 por 1. Mas, para facilitar a vida, tente

sudo apt-get install php5.6-*

isso instalará tudo relacionado ao php5.6
